What we do

Veterinary Mentoring

I provide veterinary mentoring via the MentorVet -platform.

Young vet mentoring by an AVMA accredited veterinary mentor expected to start from August 2025.

Customised coaching services for surgical preparedness and for basic equine practice.

Financial coaching for establishing small private clinics focusing on spay/neuter surgeries and basic wellness plans.

“When I think back to the start of my career, I remember the importance of having mentors around me who supported my development and pushed me to become the vet I’m today. Thank you Dr Ilona.”

The Correspondent, CSI HOPE Englsh Medium School, Madanapalle, Andra Pradesh.

Animal Welfare Project development

Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) and the Veterinary Council India (VCI), as well as the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of United Nations, had noted in 2009 and 2011, respectively, that lack of technical skills were affecting the quality and availability of surgical sterilisation, or animal birth control (ABC) programs in India as well as worldwide in many countries where the need for such programs was most.

One solution to this has been the development of surgery focused continuous education and skills development programs for veterinarians. Very practical and for limited number of participants at a time, these programs provide confidence in the essential foundation skills for vets interested in clinical/surgical career.

WVS India, under our guidance, has been at the forefront of the veterinary surgical CPD programs in India since 2010.

Your Vet's Here - Otter Animal Clinic

Since March 2024 we are providing private veterinary clinical services as stable visits mainly for equine reproduction diagnostics.

From December 2024 we provide basic vet care -private clinic model for spay/neuter surgeries and other routine procedures. Consultations are by appointment only.

“The last time I remember handling a horse by myself, was on September 2022, after these months, it was all Greek and Latin when the topic was about horse handling and management. To help me to pass my CPE, I attended the horse handling basics workshop in June 2024, where Ilona was so patiently teaching me, right from the approach to a horse, till the placement of a nasogastric tube, in an extremely professional manner.
I would definitely recommend anyone, who is interested knowing equine handling/ medicine should try this short workshop/mentoring service to gain skills.”

Low-cost diagnostics – training materials

We are looking into developing specific diagnostics guiding resources for the shelter medicine / small town veterinary clinics without access to blood analysers for full blood profiles, etc. This might be because the service is not available at all, or because most of the animals are either unowned or belong to people who can not afford full blood profiles.

However, I maintain the view that routine blood samples are not required for clinically healthy, young/middle-aged dogs and cats coming in for a routine spay/neuter.

What would be the best format for these resources? YouTube videos or illustrated PDF documents? Or something else?

Veterinarian of Record (VoR) Relationship

Otter Animal Clinic serves as the veterinarian of record (VoR) for the Hill View Farm Animal Refuge and the IPAN free-clinic veterinary first aid dispensary meant for the animals belonging to people in the rural village communities of the Masinagudi-Mudumalai area.

I also assist veterinarians and animal charities in establishing formal VoR relationships that are mutually beneficial for both parties. Animal charities must be able to get the required veterinary services for the animals in their care economically, considering their financial limitations, while also making sure that the relationship benefits the veterinarian as well. Having open communication and mutually agreed-upon roles and responsibilities written down in the form of an MoU will spare the parties from misunderstandings and help to ensure that the relationship becomes sustainable. For many charities, having a full-time vet might not be needed, as long as there is a VoR who can attend as required, as well as guide in all matters of preventive animal health and shelter medicine.
